History

When H. Allen Tate Jr. was growing up in South Carolina, he received some life-changing career advice. His father, a grocer, recognized Tate’s passion for sales and customer service, and suggested he go to Charlotte and enter the real estate business. 

 

In 1957, after Tate graduated from the University of North Carolina, he opened Allen Tate Co., at 112 S. Tryon Street in Charlotte, selling real estate and insurance. It was a one-man operation with one simple goal — to provide exceptional customer service and a “one-stop shopping” experience for buyers and sellers.

 

In 1992, Tate recruited President and CEO Pat Riley to help grow the Allen Tate Companies, along with a leadership team, and entrusted them to carry out his vision. 

 

Allen Tate Companies steadily grew into a regional real estate giant, and now serves the Carolinas with offices covering the Charlotte, Triad, Triangle, High Country and Highlands/Cashiers regions of North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina. 

 

In 2018, Allen Tate Realtors formed a partnership with Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Howard Hanna Real Estate and now ranks No. 1 among the country’s largest independently owned, non-franchised brokers. The combined companies have real estate firms in more than 13,000 agents and employees in more than 400 offices across 11 states.
